How to remove dell R770 server rack rails​

The Dell PowerEdge R770 server comes standard with 3-section telescopic sliding rails. Two common operations are covered, Remove the server from the rails (separate host from inner rails), remove the complete rail assembly from the rack posts.

Pre-Safety Preparation

Shut down the server properly, disconnect power cords, network cables and all peripheral cables. Two-person operation is recommended; the server is heavy to avoid falling. Release static electricity. Do not force plastic latches.

Pull the Server Out of the Rack Rails (Separate Server from Inner Rails)

1, Slide the R770 server outward steadily until the rails reach the full extension lock position.
2, Locate the blue/white plastic release tabs on both sides of the rails.(Junction between inner rail and middle sliding section.)
3, Push the blue tabs on both sides outward/forward simultaneously and hold them down.
4, Keep holding the tabs and pull the server further outward to disengage it from the rails.
5, The inner rails will remain attached to both sides of the server at this point.
Reverse installation: Align the J-slots of the rails and push inward until you hear a click to lock.

Detach Inner Rails from the Server Chassis

Lay the server flat. Find the latches at the rear of the inner rails on the chassis side.
Press the latches and slide the inner rails backward to disengage from the mounting hooks on the chassis.

Remove Complete Outer Rail Assemblies from Rack Posts

New generation Dell tool-less rails, compatible with square-hole and round-hole racks.
1, Remove the server first; only the left and right rail brackets remain on the rack.
2, Locate the front rail lock levers and flip them outward to release.
3, Keep the front latches unlocked, then pull the entire rail assembly forward.
4, The rear locating pins will clear the rack mounting holes, and the rail can be taken out.
For screw-fixed rail versions: Use a T20 Torx screwdriver to remove front and rear mounting screws before removal.

Optional: Remove Cable Management Arm (CMA) if Installed

1, Unclip the fasteners connecting both ends of the CMA to the rails.
2, Undo cable ties and remove the cable management arm.

Reminders

1, Pressing only one side tab will not unlock the rails. Both blue release tabs must be pressed at the same time.
2, Hard pulling may snap plastic latches and damage the rails permanently.
3, Unlocking before full extension: The limit mechanism blocks full activation of the tabs.
4, Take photos of rail orientation and "FRONT" markings before disassembly to avoid reversed installation later.
